The six-month Herschel Programme for Women in Technical Leadership seeks to address the gender imbalance in technical roles within higher education and research settings.

It covers a range of topics including self-awareness, leading in a technical environment, and negotiation skills, as well as offering unique opportunities for networking.

The national programme is open to technicians who identify as women, from all disciplines.

More than 330 individuals took part, and this was the first time Teesside University colleagues had participated.

Alexa Nixon, Senior Science Technician in the School of Health & Life Sciences who participated in the scheme, said: ‘The Herschel Programme for Women in Technical Leadership is a great initiative, and I’m pleased to have had the opportunity to take part.

'There is a gender imbalance in senior technical roles so it’s important to support women technicians to empower them to progress in their careers.

'The programme covered four modules, and it was good to share experiences with other participants. We quickly realised we all face the same challenges and issues, even though we are working in different technical roles.'

Alexa added: ‘It has been a wonderful experience. I’ve learned a lot about myself and gained more confidence, but the best part has been the opportunity to meet some amazing, inspirational women – including some wonderful women technicians who also work at Teesside University.’

Helen Cutting, Executive Director (Legal & Governance Services and University Secretary) & Equality & Diversity Champion (Gender), said: 'Teesside University is incredibly proud of our talented technical colleagues who completed the Herschel Programme, and we know dedicated programmes such as this can help support colleagues to progress in their roles.’
