New Year Honours for Teesside

04 January 2010

Two senior members of the University have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honours list

Sandy Anderson, Chairman of the Board of Governors and Professor Paul Keane, Dean of the School of Health & Social Care both received OBEs.

Mr Anderson received his for services to the North East community and Professor Keane for his services to health care.

Sandy Anderson, former senior Vice-President of ICI, is also now chairman of Ensus UK, involved in building Europe’s biggest wheat refinery to produce bioethanol, at Wilton, on Teesside.

He said: ‘I was absolutely delighted and honoured to receive the award, although a lot of people have helped to achieve these things, not just the one individual who gets the award.’

Professor Paul Keane spent many years in the Health Service before joining the University in 1995 as Deputy Director for the School of Health & Social Care.

Since becoming Dean in 2000, the School has grown from 3,000 students to now well over 10,000. This has been achieved by diversifying into many new areas associated with health and social care.

He was appointed Professor in 2004 because of his enterprising and leadership achievements. The School is now recognised internationally for its responsiveness, innovation, collaborative working and the excellence of its provision in teaching and research.

Professor Keane said: 'I am absolutely delighted and deeply honoured to receive this award. I wish to acknowledge the support of my family as well as the excellent working relationships I have had with Service and Academic colleagues over the past forty years.'

Professor Graham Henderson, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Teesside University said: ‘I am proud to have such a superb Chairman of Governors as Sandy Anderson. His contribution to the industrial development of our region and to the University has been immense and this honour is thoroughly well deserved.

‘I am delighted to see Paul Keane receive this honour. He has made an outstanding contribution to health care education.’
