Core modules

Advanced Issues in Law (Domestic and Global)

Study contemporary domestic and global legal issues, take account of current legal debates and develop areas of interest for further research.

Applied/Advanced Practice in Social Sciences, Humanities and Law

This module allows you to demonstrate learning and gain experience in the workplace. You secure your own work experience with the support of the course team and identify and apply learning directly to a specific work-related project

Law, Rights and Society

Develop a deep and critical understanding of the nature of law and legal reasoning. Many of the practical problems associated with law stem from fundamental disagreements concerning the narrative structure of the law within society. Consider the significant and expansive role of human rights in a socio-legal context.

Legal Research for Postgraduate Writing

Develop the legal research capabilities to succeed at postgraduate level. This module encourages autonomous learning, allowing you to communicate fluently at the appropriate academic level.

LLM Dissertation

You apply your knowledge and research skills to a specific area of expertise.

Human Rights in Criminal Law and Criminal Evidence

Develop an advanced and critical understanding of criminal law and evidence, with emphasis on key human rights issues faced by judges and legislators today.

Investigation of Organised Crime

This module explores organised crime and its investigation by drawing on a number of sources. Relevant literature is supported by academic specialists in the investigation of organised crime and its support. You will critically analyse UK police investigative practices and those in other countries as well as the varying governmental responses internationally.
You are assessed by 4,000-word essay.

Law Clinic

Gain practical experience offering pro bono advice to members of the Teesside community. Under the supervision of a qualified solicitor, work on live client cases involving family law, employment law or civil disputes, enabling you to develop practical legal skills and competencies. Your choice should reflect your chosen area of practice post-qualification. You may also work on other legal projects.

Reimagining Sustainable Management in Global Markets

Gain a comprehensive understanding of key concepts, strategies and practices to reimagine responsible management in the global market, allowing you to effectively manage organisations and proactively explore new ways of thinking creatively to navigate an evolving global landscape. Focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), learning how and why they came about through key literature, research and economic policy.

Also explore and examine the link between economic policies and environmental sustainability, the effects of international trade and globalisation on environmental resources, the role of international environmental agreements, and the emergence of new business models centred on the principles of sustainability and social accountability.

How you learn

You are introduced to relevant legal concepts and principles through interactive seminars. You prepare in advance of these sessions by actively researching relevant materials for group discussion.

Your learning is supported by digital technologies, ensuring you are digitally empowered, future-ready and globally connected. Employers are involved in the delivery of a number of sessions, allowing you to expand your network.

How you are assessed

Assessment methods include personal reflections, presentations, moots (mock appeals), critical and analytic writing, essays and a self-directed research project (dissertation). Oral assessments provide you with the opportunity to develop practical skills and the ability to confidently articulate complex issues of law.

 

Entry requirements

A 2.2 (minimum) honours degree in a legal or related discipline or equivalent qualification or equivalent experience.

GCSE English at grade 4 or equivalent.

Career opportunities

Graduates have successfully secured employment in fields such as teaching, management, human resources, the media, a number of criminal justice agencies, related organisations and pressure groups. This course opens up opportunities within the civil service, politics, business, immigration, public policy, the healthcare sector, data protection and citizens’ advice bureau.

Work placement

The Law School at Teesside has long established links with the local legal community. You gain a placement within the Law Clinic, and networking opportunities with professionals, supported by our active Student Law Society.

You are encouraged and supported to gain work experience with a range of legal professionals where available. There are also opportunities for relevant voluntary work, including through the University’s VolunTees scheme and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
