Course overview

This apprenticeship offers a specialised and comprehensive understanding of production management principles, methodologies, and practices exclusively tailored to the nuances of creative industries, spanning film, TV, live performance, and VFX.

This apprenticeship supports the development of production management skills enabling the development of compelling digitally enabled design solutions for internal and/or external clients, across a range of sectors, and for a range of different contexts. The content of this apprenticeship supports the implementation of design concepts to develop and communicate new products, and to provide design solutions utilising digital design technologies.

The course aims to produce confident, competent and capable design professionals able to operate in a range of related roles. Production managers can be responsible for creating digital design solutions for a wide range of areas including online services, installations, design for devices, interactive services and mobile applications.

Designs will take a brand through multiple creative digital assets that convey the desired message through digital media. There is an interdisciplinary focus on using a broad range of creative digital techniques to create innovative digital design work for a wide range of media channels.

Advanced Production Management

Delve deep into the analysis and application of production-related organisational structures, cultures, dynamics, and roles within the complex environments of the creative industries. Focus on the development of high-performance teams, effective management of production teams, and collaborative work approaches to enhance productivity.

Production Management Contexts

Gain a deep understanding of the role of production management, enabling you to apply diverse skills and knowledge across various production settings. Through case studies and critical analysis, you develop the expertise needed to excel as effective production managers in different creative industries.

 

Year 2 core modules

Production Management in Practice

Explore the intricate and multifaceted aspects of production management within the creative industries, specifically tailored for film and TV production, VFX, and live performance. Delve into the detailed requirements of interpreting creative briefs, producing production schedules, managing teams, cultivating relationships, adhering to legal and ethical frameworks and policies, reporting progress, and collaborative project delivery.

The module equips you with specialised skills required for production management within the creative industries, enabling you to navigate complex creative briefs, manage teams effectively, adhere to policies, report progress, and collaboratively deliver high-quality productions within specified constraints of time and budget.

Advanced Production Management for Live Performance

Explore live production processes – from conceptualisation to staging – covering the development of show models, technical drawings, costings and production schedules. You focus on technical roles, departmental requirements, venue liaison, health and safety legislation, and managing the physical aspects of productions.

Production Accounting

Explore the critical role of the production accountant in the production of film, television or short-form content. Cover the principles of accounting, budgeting, cash flow management, financial planning and effective cost control from project set-up through to project close.

Production Management for Film, Television and Short-form

Explore production management in the context of film, television or short-form production. Learn the critical skills, knowledge and behaviours you need to succeed as a production manager through a detailed study of the process, including end-to-end production workflows, resource management, content capture in a range of contexts, post-production processes for a variety of broadcasters, and versioning for multiplatform and international distribution.

Production Management for VFX, Post-production and Animation

Focus on the specific skills and knowledge you need as a production manager in visual effects (VFX), post-production or animation. Explore the detailed requirements for understanding the VFX, 2D/3D and animation pipelines, working with VFX artists/animators, the wider VFX/animation industry, post-production processes, industry technical requirements, and post-production delivery standards.

How you learn

The course is structured into 4 x 30 credit modules leading to 120 credit PGDip award along with the apprenticeship standard.

3 x 30 credit modules are core for all learners, and apprentices then select one option module specific to their pathway.

How you are assessed

Assessment has been designed to develop understanding, critical thinking, and practical application of skills, knowledge, and behaviours within the role of a production manager in the creative industries. Typical assessments include the development of written reflections, creative briefs, production schedules, research portfolios, case study analysis and strategy documents.
