Why university and why Teesside?

I have held a successful career within retail and other sectors but always had a passion for science. When there was a change in my circumstances, I felt the time was right to pursue a career change.

Middlesbrough is my home town and I feel very lucky to have Teesside University so close enabling me to further my education whilst remaining close to my family and friends.

Why biochemistry?

With a keen interest in research, biochemistry was the ideal course for me. Understanding the human body at a molecular level provides the deep understanding for my career choice.

I enjoy the variety of modules, it keeps the learning interesting and diverse. The practical sessions are great and solidify your learning from the taught sessions. I thoroughly enjoyed Analytical Chemistry, and the Human Diseases and Immunology modules.

What do you think about the campus?

It’s a great campus with some excellent facilities, such as the recently renovated library. Each floor provides a unique learning environment with group study space, quiet individual study space and silent space.

There are also great student services that offer study-related help and advice, and much more.

Teesside University has contributed to the growth of Middlesbrough with its substantial investment. The campus has transformed the heart of the town.

Did you do any volunteering during your studies?

The University has a great Voluntees programme. I secured a volunteering role at the immunology lab at James Cook University Hospital. This is a fantastic opportunity as it is additional laboratory experience within an industry relevant to my degree.

In my first year I was the Biochemistry course rep. I attended forum meetings, and presented ideas or concerns to be considered for future changes. Feedback is important to the University, they are always looking to change and adapt to meet student and prospective employers’ needs.

What experience have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I had vast experience within other sectors, but my degree has helped me to understand the biosciences industry. I gained fundamental knowledge and laboratory techniques and skills for my new career path. The volunteering work will be invaluable to my CV and future job applications. I have also gained confidence in presentation skills and scientific writing.

I am considering a PhD when I graduate to prepare me for a future role within research.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

Yes, my course included mature students like myself, and the excellent teaching staff, graduate tutors and laboratory technicians ensure you get the most from your studies. Teesside excels in the biosciences sector with excellent teaching and facilities such as the new National Horizons Centre in Darlington.
