Shivani-Meera Chouhan

Why university and why Teesside?

I had previously studied Certificate in Higher Education Dental Nursing Practice here and the staff were fantastic, so I knew I would be happy doing my degree here.

I've always had an interest in research and a passion for healthcare, so health sciences is a perfect mixture of both.

What do you like most about your course?

The variety of modules in science and healthcare fields means you gain a good knowledge base. I enjoyed learning about clinical genetics, and human development, where we studied its development over time, from birth to old age, as well as human development from the Stone Age.

What do you think about the campus and services?

I love campus life and there is a great mixture of services. The cafes and eateries all offer great food and drink. I study in the library, as it’s a great environment to be in, the staff and services are great.

I love Middlesbrough, it is like home now. Everything is in walking distance and there are some great pubs and restaurants.

Any extracurricular roles?

I was a member of the Human Biology Society, and the finance chair. I loved the different opportunities such as hosting events and first aid training sessions.

I was a school rep and enjoyed being able to help students and voice student opinions. I also worked at the Students’ Union, and in my spare time, I volunteer at the food bank.

What skills/experience have you gained that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I have gained scientific writing skills and experience of working in laboratories, which I will use in my future career. I have also developed my public speaking skills, which I previously struggled with, but now I feel more confident.

Future ambitions?

I have applied to do a master’s in clinical genetics, so I can pursue a career in genetic counselling. I’m also interested in, potentially doing a PhD.

Would you recommend Teesside and your course?

Without a doubt. I've met so many great students and staff, learnt so much and gained great skills for the future.
Teesside has a great selection of courses and is great for students of all ages. My advice is get involved with student life and activities, you’ll make life-long friends and gain some great skills.
