I had spent over 20 years developing my skills on the local music scene while working in construction. But at age 38 I was unhappy and decided to pursue my passion for music full time. With encouragement from my partner, I left my job and enrolled on the course at Teesside – it’s in my hometown and the course content was what I was looking for.
I have developed masses of knowledge and enjoyed every aspect of my time at Teesside. I’ve gained various perspectives into the music industry and the careers available. My course has transformed me from someone with little confidence in my ability, to a head-strong individual with a vast and ever-growing knowledge base.
Everything you need is on campus. The facilities are very good and the support network is outstanding. I found out that I had a cognitive learning disorder as a direct result of testing provided by the University, and I was offered additional support to overcome it. This has changed the way I learn and helped me achieve fantastic grades. The course tutors have been excellent and nothing is too much trouble for them.
I am a course representative and chair for the music society, where we invite like-minded individuals to come and have fun with music, socialise and feel part of a group. It’s a very positive environment. Everyone brings something to the group and takes something away too.
I host house music events locally and internationally and have just returned from a tour of Ibiza with my brand riffraff. I wouldn't have done this without the inspiration from Teesside University and my tutor, Al McNichol. I also produce music and work with various record labels, and I am embarking on a career as a freelance DJ and production teacher.
So many, including mixing and mastering, synthesis, music theory, recording, artist management, marketing and promotion, networking and social skills. I have also gained confidence in my abilities and have become a respected figure within the music industry.
Yes, I would highly recommend both the university and my course. The facilities are good and the tutors have been great, both of which have helped me to succeed. Enrolling at Teesside was the best decision I ever made.
