Danie Russell

BA (Hons) Human Resource Management with Foundation Year

The course has given me an insight into the business world and taught me things about my own development that I didn’t expect.

The library was a life saver for independent study.

Why University?

I initially applied in 2016, but I withdrew my application due to fear and anxiety. After working for a few years, I decided I was not going to let fear stop me forever.

Why Teesside?

It’s my local University and I wanted to continue working while studying. I also relied on public transport, so the location is ideal for getting the bus.

Why human resource management?

My job at the time required someone with expertise in this area. The course stood out to me as I’m always up for a challenge and I love to solve problems and offer support. I’ve always been interested in the running of businesses and I am particularly drawn to the people aspect.

Favourite thing about your course?

I like the interaction with other students, it gives you an insight into other people’s perspectives.

Favourite modules?

I liked the modules that focused on individuals’ development and how different factors can help or hinder their progression. I particularly enjoyed Business Psychology as well as Personal and Professional Development for Business.

Tell us about the campus and facilities

I’m a quiet person, so the library was a great place for me. With multiple floors for different purposes, it was a life saver for independent study.

The Students’ Union was also great – there’s so much you can access there, from social aspects to careers advice.

Tell us about Middlesbrough

Having a shopping centres on the doorstep is great. There are social facilities for everyone and the transport links from the centre are ideal for when you have free time and want to travel a bit further away for a change of scenery.

Would you recommend Teesside?

Yes, I’d recommend both the University and my course. Despite challenges throughout the pandemic, the staff have provided the same level of support and guidance online.

The course has given me an insight into the business world and taught me things about my own development that I didn’t expect.

Any advice for future students?

It's okay if you don't understand things straight away, there are lots of people in the same situation. Talk to peers to help build your understanding of the course and develop friendships at the same time.
