Teesside University has exceeded my expectations.

Why Teesside?

Teesside was my only choice. When I first walked around campus I was amazed by the facilities. The staff and the support available are amazing, and the Library has every resource you need.

Why dental nursing?

I was interested in becoming a dental nurse when I was younger, but family life became a priority.
I raised my three children around jobs which suited my family life. A dental career was always on my mind, and I eventually decided to follow my dream.

Best thing about your course?

I have loved every minute of my course, it has been the best experience ever. I particularly enjoyed the foundations of general and dental anatomy modules.
The dental nurse requirements covered cross infection, basic life support and clinical skills, which were reinforced throughout our clinical placement, to ensure a safe and sterile environment and provide effective support to the dental team.

What do you think about the campus and the services?

Teesside has so much to offer, and I feel I’ve only scratched the surface of what is available. As a mature student I haven’t really taken part in the social scene, but I am aware of the clubs and events that are available. I'm just loving my experience in a different way and taking full advantage of the library resources and vast knowledge of the IT department and teaching staff.

What do you think about Middlesbrough and the surrounding area?

The campus is in central Middlesbrough with easy access to shopping, places to eat, cinema and nightlife. There is also a nearby retail park, Teesside Park that has shopping, entertainment and dining. There are regular events in Middlesbrough such as the Orange Pip Market and short drives to places like Roseberry Topping and various parks or museums.

What skills have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I have gained clinical skills in accordance with dental nurse scope of practice to become a GDC-registered professional, which has been my dream. I’ve also gained the skills to recognise the importance of the connections between general and dental health. I’m also confident in using technology.

What are your future ambitions?

I will be staying on at Teesside to complete the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene, which I am super excited about. After that I have plans to support learners to achieve their dreams, so perhaps a teaching or a support role for other students.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

100%. The staff have a wealth of knowledge, the dental facility offers clinical experience in a dental practice environment. Teesside University has exceeded my expectations.

Any advice to students thinking of coming to study here?
