FdSc Nursing Associate, Higher Apprenticeship

Chris has been working in nursing since 1997 and wanted to become the best version of himself. He felt that completing the FdSc Nursing Associate Higher Apprenticeship will help him progress in the field that he loves.

I like the variety that comes with it – dipping my toes into all four fields of nursing and the experiences that comes with them.

Why university and why Teesside?

I have always wanted to better myself but thought I was academically ill suited. However, with this apprenticeship programme and help from my employer and the government, I feel this is my best possible chance. Teesside is leading the way with this course, as proven by the (recent award at the Student Nursing Times Awards.

Why nursing?

It’s the career I have been doing since 1997 and this course will help me progress in the field that I love.

What do you like about your course?

I like the variety that comes with it – dipping my toes into all four fields of nursing and the experiences that comes with them. And of course, the depth of knowledge that the team members have in each of the placements.

I am looking forward to the on campus days at Darlington as it has a wholly different feel being taught face-to-face and seeing your peers in real life. You can bounce ideas and thoughts off each other and offer support.

Thoughts on the campus?

With the course primarily being taught over Teams, I have not had much experience of campus life. However, I have used the library and found it to be immensely useful. I would definitely recommend it.

The course’s face-to-face days are based at the Darlington campus and although it is small, it’s packed with resources. There is also a little cafè with some very tasty dishes.

Tell us about your placements

I am currently on placement in a community team based in Hartlepool and I am loving it.

Anything else you are involved in?

I am a cohort rep and I am looking forward to being a link between my peers and the lecturers.

Ambitions for the future?

To qualify and become the best version of myself.

I feel like I am building on the knowledge that I have gained since starting my career in 1997, which will be useful in my day-to-day working life going forward.

Would you recommend Teesside and your course?

Absolutely. The lecturers are amazing and so approachable, and the course has just received an award.

For anyone thinking of studying here, I would absolutely say go for it. The level of support and advice available is second to none, from the course leaders to the librarians – they can’t do enough to help you.
