Gary Renahan

BA (Hons) Education Studies

Gary has really enjoyed the opportunity to go on placement and learn the ins and outs of teaching in a primary school.

Middlesbrough is a beautiful part of the country. I’ve been very happy being based here for my degree and my children have enjoyed their time here.

Why university and why Teesside?

I was working overseas, and a new visa requirement meant I needed a degree to work. I came to Teesside because I have two young children who love the beach, so I was drawn to Redcar. I wanted to pursue a career in education and the scope of modules on the education studies course is incredible.

Favourite thing about your course?

The specialised modules in special educational needs and disabilities, comparative education and leading and management in education really helped me focus on my career path. This course has given me insight into the sector and helped my decision to remain in education.

Tell us about Teesside

The library is a nice space and the range of books for my course was impressive. I was never without a source I needed.

Tell us about your placement

One of the modules on the course gives you the opportunity to go on a placement. I was placed at a local primary school for one day a week for six weeks – it was great.

The placement allowed me to make decisions about my future, without that, things might be different. I ended up extending my stay at that school on a voluntary basis as it was mutually beneficial and allowed me to get invaluable experience. Of course, there came the time when I needed to write a few thousand words about that experience, but it was enjoyable, nonetheless.

What skills have you gained that you feel will help your career?

I won an award for my academic writing, due to the guidance of my module leaders. These skills helped me get accepted at the University of Cambridge for a master’s degree.

Would you recommend Teesside and your course?

I would recommend Teesside University because of my positive experiences with the lecturers. The faculty are so compassionate and encouraging. Because of them I’ll be off to one of the best universities in the world in September. I would have never even dreamed of applying if it wasn’t for the staff at Teesside. I owe them so much for their hard work and I am eternally grateful for what they have done for me during my time here.

Any advice for future students?

Find yourself a study space on campus which can become a regular spot to do your work. Familiarise yourself with the library as soon as you can and make the most of the resources it has.
