Katie Maughan

Why Teesside?

I loved creative media in college and wanted to learn more. Teesside had a modern campus and facilities, as well as successful alumni in roles I was interested in. I felt I would be able to try lots of new things, including networking and socialising within the student facilities.

Why film and television production?

I am interested in storytelling and how productions come to life, and I wanted to learn more about that world. When I studied in college, I was interested in all areas of media creation, and the film and television production course at Teesside offered a range of modules.

Best thing about the course?

I explored many different roles within film and TV, giving me the freedom to try new things and discover where my interests were. I loved the creative modules as they supported my creative growth. I was also given a range of work experience opportunities, leading to my current role as an assistant producer.

Tell us about your work experience.

I had a summer internship with Tees Valley Combined Authority, which was sourced for me by the Student Futures team. In my third year, there was a module where I pitched shows to a real client – a huge learning curve for me. I then joined the graduate intern scheme to work as an assistant producer at Enchanted Isles, developing scripts for British TV networks.

What do you think about the campus?

The facilities are always being updated and expanded for students and alumni. I always felt supported and still keep in touch with the University for advice. I loved spending time in the studios creating content, and writing essays in the Library. There are plenty of places to hang out with friends and it felt like I was a part of a real community.

Did you get involved in any extracurricular activities?

I was in the archery club in my first year, which was a nice way to meet new people and unwind outside the classroom. I also joined a Harry Potter-themed society, helping me build my social skills. In my third year I was a student ambassador, where I helped advertise the University through open days, school visits and on-campus sessions with students. I got to share how university helped me develop as a person, while building my public speaking and communication skills

Tell us about opportunities in the local area.

I think the creative and technical industries in Middlesbrough are growing, with many companies being run by Teesside alumni. There are a lot more opportunities than there used to be.

How has Teesside helped your career?

I was awarded a scholarship in my first year, helping me fund my student films and professional website, which I still use today. I gained a wide range of technical and creative experience to take on different roles in the creative industries, which has led to my full-time employment. The support I received as a graduate has helped me navigate life after education.

What are your ambitions for the future?
I want to keep trying new things and work on more creative projects as either a writer or producer. I'd love the opportunity to work outside of the UK and travel, but I'd also love to return to Teesside University at some point. I feel like I really discovered myself at Teesside and it will always be home to some of my best memories, so I'd like to inspire the next generation.

Would you recommend Teesside?

Teesside supports you in your studies and outside of them, giving you plenty of opportunities to develop personally and professionally. The film and television production course equips you with skills for a range of media roles and the opportunity to create some very high-quality work. All of this is extremely valuable as you enter the industry as a professional.

What advice would you offer students thinking of coming to study here?

Make sure you take every opportunity you get, whether it's for fun or professional development. Cherish the friends and memories that you make and you’ll be so grateful you invested in yourself.
