Royal Navy engineer Dan Markie shares his experience of studying online while working full-time in a demanding role, and how it’s helping him shape his future.
For anyone looking to study online, Teesside offers great support and flexibility.
Because of the support offered through the ELC scheme, and I found the BEng Tech in Instrumentation and Control Engineering an ideal fit for my current role and future ambitions. It closely aligns with my interests and day-to-day responsibilities in the Royal Navy, offering a deeper technical understanding of the systems I work with regularly – particularly in the context of nuclear power and control systems.
Using simulation software like MATLAB, Simulink and Tinkercad really brings theory to life. I particularly enjoyed the Digital Control module, which explores how digital and analogue systems interact.
Although I haven’t visited campus, the online experience has been excellent. Resources like the digital library and the Helping Engineers Learn Mathematics project have been incredibly useful. The support from academic staff is brilliant. There’s always help available through email, live sessions or 1-2-1s.
I’m developing technical, analytical and practical skills in areas like feedback systems, instrumentation and circuit design. I’m also gaining transferable skills like problem solving, technical reporting and collaborating across teams – crucial in both military and civilian engineering environments.
I aim to remain within the nuclear industry, whether through continued service in naval propulsion or transitioning into civil nuclear. My long-term goal is to contribute to projects like Rolls Royce’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programme, helping deliver clean, zero-emission energy in the UK and beyond.
