Why Teesside?

It was important for me to continue my qualifications beyond college and Teesside was the perfect fit. The flexibility of the course delivery and proximity to home made it an easy decision. The modern and well-designed campus was also a big draw for me.

Why journalism?

My passion for creative writing and environmental stories drew me toward journalism. I like the mediums you can use to tell stories and topics you explore including podcasts, print and video.

Favourite thing about your course?

I enjoy a lot of elements of the course including the support from tutors, the flexibility to explore areas you have a personal interest in and the wider opportunities available.

What do you think of the campus and student services?

The campus was one of the main things that drew me to Teesside. For example, the Student Unions’ radio station promotes opportunities to pursue creative ideas, the library is a safe and focused environment to study, and the University’s Advance scheme provides you with an iPad, keyboard and credit to put toward textbooks which has been invaluable in supporting my studies.

Have you worked on any projects alongside your studies?

I am working on the Planet Forward project, which is an environmental storytelling project based in Washington DC. I was also involved with and worked on a collaborative project to produce a short TV segment. I’ve produced journalistic stories and will be going to Washington DC to attend the company’s annual summit.

What skills and experiences have you developed at Teesside that will help your future career?

I’ve learned a range of skills including operating podcast and radio equipment which is very important for my career in journalism and the University’s accreditation with the National Council for the Training of Journalists sets me up for a successful career.

Future ambitions?

To produce impactful stories around the globe, from environmentally sensitive issues like climate change in the African Sahel to politically tense events in the west.

Would you recommend Teesside University?

Yes. I would recommend the journalism course at Teesside. The facilities, community-feel and journalism course is perfect for anyone with a keen insight for storytelling that address issues that really matter, nationally and internationally.
