Emma Bidgood

Why did you come to Teesside?

After my undergraduate degree, I wanted to go straight on to complete my master's at Teesside but I felt that the programmes available at that time would not help me to direct my education down the route I wanted.

When I saw that the Ministry of Building, Innovation, and Education (MOBIE) course was going to be running for the first time, I couldn't believe it! MOBIE rolls many of my design interests into one and this course has allowed me to express that.

The fact that this course is running at Teesside makes it even more important.

Why this subject?

I feel that I can use my skill set for something that can inflict real change. I have always been incredibly keen to complete my masters, but I needed it to be 'for something'.

What did you like about the course?

The multi-disciplinary approach. It allows various roles and backgrounds to come together and be considered in conjunction with one-another.

Did you work on any projects or placements?

I was very lucky to be a part of the Homelessness Hackathon design team at Housing 2019 in Manchester. It was a great opportunity to be able to use my skills and work with some very important people in the housing industry and tackle the crisis we are facing.

I also recently found out that I have been selected as a RESI Trailblazer 2019 – I feel hugely proud.

What skills have you gained at Teesside?

The skills that I have learned are invaluable. This course has opened my eyes to a career that I didn't think existed.

What are your ambitions?

I want to exercise my role as a disruptor within the industry, ensuring that design and thinking standards are of the highest quality. I would love to work in a role that allows me to push forward thinking design for our society and environment.

Do you have any advice or recommendations?

If you are thinking of doing the Advanced Home Futures course at Teesside I would definitely recommend it! The course welcomes people from a range of backgrounds – there are no labels.

For anyone thinking of studying here, the only advice I could offer is try it. Teesside University is warm, welcoming and full of lots of incredible people, you'll be surprised how comfortable you feel here.
