Why an MBA?

I’ve wanted to do the MBA for a few years so I’m really pleased to have the chance to do it now. I saw it as an opportunity to get more of an awareness of my team and the whole area of IT – particularly as my first degree was in computer science.

Best thing about the course?

Doing the MBA has certainly helped me see the bigger picture outside of my own team and what they deliver. I used to think that business was just about selling and making a profit, now I understand where the business is heading and why.

The course is a good balance of theory and practical insight from regional industry speakers. There’s also site visits to a range of organisations including not-for-profit and the private sector.

Is the course helping you in your career?

Given my role as a manager, the focus on leadership, management and adapting my style in order to work with different people has been really useful. I’ve put this into practice already and it’s been really beneficial.

What advice would you give to those interested in doing the course?

Anyone doing the MBA should understand that it involves a lot more than handing in assignments and turning up to lectures. You really need to commit to the whole programme so I’d say that anyone looking at the course would need to be stable in their home and career life. If you can do that then you will be well-placed to get a lot out of the course to take back to your workplace immediately and for your own future development.
