Jess Brain joined Teesside to pursue her passion for flight, earning a BEng (Hons) in Aerospace Engineering. Now, she’s taking her career aspirations to new heights by studying MSc Aviation Management.
If you are looking for a connected and compact campus, and would like more interaction with lecturers, then studying here would be ideal.
I didn’t plan on coming to university until quite late – I never thought it was for me. My options for university were quite limited as I do gymnastics competitively, but after searching online I found Teesside. I came for an open day and fell in love with the campus. I liked how connected the campus was compared to other universities and decided that Teesside was for me. I’ve also been awarded the Performance Sport scholarship, providing me with support to continue with gymnastics while studying.
I have always had a passion for aviation since a very young age. At the age of 14 I started to fly light aircraft and got my private pilot’s license at 17. Studying a master’s in aviation is allowing me to pursue my passion, while opening my eyes to other areas of aviation.
I like learning at Teesside Aviation Skills Academy at Teesside International Airport. We get guest speakers in most weeks to talk about their experiences in the industry. We also got to go on a trip to London, which involved going to the British Airways headquarters, something I never would have got to do if I wasn’t studying a masters.
The Library is a great place to study, with Starbucks recently opening in there which is great. There are different levels in the library depending on whether you want to study in a group or in silence.
I enjoy Bongo Bingo in the Students’ Union on campus. There are also several cafés on campus – my favourites being The Garden or StrEAT.
The security team are also great, ensuring I am safe. After finishing training late at night, they will come and get me from my car and walk me back to my accommodation.
I enjoy going to Roseberry Topping or beaches like Saltburn or Seaton Carew.
I would say my presentation skills have improved massively since studying my master’s, which will help me in the future.
I would love to be a pilot.
Definitely. The lecturers are always willing to help you if you are stuck with work and the facilities are amazing. If you are looking for a connected and compact campus, and would like more interaction with lecturers, then studying here would be ideal.
