Chris is an ESG Programme Manager at Gamma Telecoms, hoping to apply the expertise gained during his apprenticeship to excel in his new role.

I wanted to deepen and accelerate my on-the-job learning, and improve prospects in my new job.

Why did you want to do the apprenticeship?

I’m in a new sustainability role within my organisation, and I wanted to deepen and accelerate my on-the-job learning. I also wanted to improve my prospects and potential for success in my new job.

Did it take long to make the decision around returning to education as a mature student?

No. I was always going to commit from the moment the opportunity was put in front of me. The factors I considered were:

  • Can I commit the hours?
  • Can I balance family life?
  • Can I maintain my levels of physical exercise as this is key for my mental health?
  • Can I succeed or will I be completely out of my depth?
  • Have I got family support?
  • Will work support me through it?

How do you balance your study, work and family commitments?

It is challenging, but it's been made possible with the support I get from work and family. The nature of the apprenticeship means that I do most of the work in work hours, but I also do some of the work independently in my own time.
