Jamie Seymour

Sustainability Business Specialist Apprenticeship (integrated MSc Sustainability Leadership)

Jamie Seymour, a Low Carbon Fuels Regulatory Advisor at bp, pursued an apprenticeship to deepen his understanding of renewable energy policy.

I have found it really rewarding to take the time to review academic research on topics that are very relevant to my day job and have enjoyed debating complex topics with the rest of the cohort.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Jamie Seymour, and I work as a Low Carbon Fuels Regulatory Advisor in bp’s London Supply, Trading and Shipping organisation.

What made you want to study the programme?

Having worked closely with the UK and EU renewable energy regulations for several years I was keen to go back to basics and really understand the policy drivers behind the regulations I follow.

What has been the most valuable thing you've learnt so far?

To date I have completed two module assessments. For each assessment I have tried to apply knowledge I have learnt to my day job, across different settings such as refineries and in aviation.

How have you found studying an apprenticeship?

I have found it really rewarding to take the time to review academic research on topics that are very relevant to my day job and have enjoyed debating complex topics with the rest of the cohort. As we have progressed through the course, I have got better at carving out the time that’s needed to focus on the course content, without it adversely effecting either family or work life.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about studying this apprenticeship?

If you wait for the perfect time to sign up, you may never get round to doing it. Instead sign up now as I am sure you will find that the more you get engaged with the course content and link it to your job the easier you will find it to fit into your schedule.
