Course overview

This course is aimed at improving the existing provision, along with the outcomes for service users and ultimately development of the health and social care workforce to the highest possible standards – maximising personalisation, person-centred care and key quality care concepts.

Course structure

Year 1 core modules

Improving Health and Wellbeing in Communities

Explore public health initiatives and key areas of health and social care where individuals are at risk of or have been recently diagnosed with serious health implications. Learn different ways of communicating with individuals in diverse communities, encouraging them to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing.

Individual Practice Project (Dissertation)

Build upon your skills and knowledge from previous modules research a negotiated topic area relevant to health and social care, and produce a 6,000-word literature critique.

Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care

Develop your knowledge, leadership and management skills to prepare yourself for employment. Explore and critique a range of leadership and management theories used to lead the strategic direction of service improvement initiatives within the sector. Reflect on leadership styles, qualities and effectiveness when in a period of change or development.

Policy and Practice in Health and Social Care

Explore and critique current policies and key drivers within the sector, evaluating their potential impact on organisational practice.

Research in Health and Social Care

Explore the importance of research in the health and social care sector. You focus on two aspects of research – the philosophical basis of different methodologies and the practice of carrying out research, including issues of approach, method, sampling and analysis. Critique and evaluate current research papers and make judgements about these.

How you learn

Learning is classroom based with a variety of lectures, electronic resources, group work, presentations and a small-scale independent research study.

You access a range of resource materials accessible online using the virtual learning environment, the learning resource centre at Stockton Riverside College and Teesside University’s Library Services.

All assessments are submitted using the virtual learning environment. Online submission is through Dropbox available through the College’s digital learning platform.

How you are assessed

Assessment and feedback include a variety of methods including academic and reflective essays, presentations and producing a dissertation. Also:

  • Availability of formative assessment – structured formally throughout individual modules in the form of one-to-one tutorials.
  • Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care is assessed through an individual 15-minute presentation on a negotiated topic area linked to service improvement and your own leadership style.
  • Policy and Practice is assessed through a 3,000-word essay on a negotiated area of policy within the sector.
  • Research in Health and Social Care is assessed through a 3,000-word literature critique of a selected Health and Social Care focused paper.
  • Improving Health and Wellbeing in Communities is assessed through a 3,000-word electronic health information resource for service users.Individual Practice project is assessed by a 6,000-word literature review on an agreed subject area within Health and Social Care practice.
