Why did you decided to go to university and Teesside?

I completed my BA (Hons) English Studies at Teesside University; I loved every minute so I knew I would be in good company for my MA. I was looking to form some academic foundations on which to build a career. It was so great that a campus so close to home was specialising in a subject so close to my heart. Creative writing had always been my favourite subject at school.

What do you like most about your course?

The lecturers were extremely supportive and took my goals and aspirations seriously. Screenwriting was my favourite module, and I’ll never forget the lessons learned on it.

What do you think about the campus and the services offered?

I loved the library, and often left with arms full of books. The Students’ Union was great for other reasons, as well as the surrounding bars. I’ve always loved the character of the town and the sense of community.

What skills/experience have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I learned the basics of screenwriting, the importance of conflict and theme, how to develop a keen ear required to write sharp dialogue, as well as the all-important dramatic techniques that provided solid foundations to build my screenwriting career.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I’m currently an up and coming screenwriter. Whilst studying at Teesside University, eleven years ago, it was my dream to write a movie that would be released around the world. That has now happened with my first movie The Dare and I’m excited to build on that achievement.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

Yes. The campus is fantastic, full of resources, and the staff are supportive, accommodating, approachable and extremely knowledgeable. My advice to anyone thinking of coming here is take in everything you are taught because you never know when you might need it.
