Why university and why Teesside?

I’ve always had an interest in forensics from watching shows such as Dexter and Forensic Files. I knew it wasn’t going to be as glamorous as it is on TV, but it still interested me enough to do a forensic biology undergraduate degree. I choose Teesside as the course was accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, which is important for my future career.

Why diagnostic radiography?

In the final year of my undergraduate degree, a guest lecturer from diagnostic radiography did a presentation about forensic radiography and that instantly drew my attention. After some research I decided to apply for the MSc Diagnostic Radiography course here at Teesside as I knew the area and I had a good support network.

Best thing about your course?

Being on placement, as we got hands on and the staff were so friendly and very supportive. You get an insight of what it is like to be working as a diagnostic radiographer and it helps you decide which speciality you want to focus on.

What do you think about the campus and services?

The Students’ Union offer a great deal of support from course reps, housing advice, financial support and help with employment. Around the campus is great for students as it has a lot of social activities to do, with a wide range of pubs and places to eat out.

Any extracurricular roles?

I am a member of the University’s Women's Rugby Union team. The team is such a lovely bunch of girls who welcome anybody of any ability. I didn’t know anything about rugby, but I always wanted to try it. The team and coaches helped with any questions and it has really boosted my confidence.

Do you have a job or do any volunteering?

I’m a student ambassador and I really recommend anyone looking for a part time job, to be a part of this team. The role includes visiting schools and helping students with their future. I also work at University open days - you certainly won't get bored of this job. I’ve also volunteered for MIND as an appropriate adult.

What skills/experience have you gained?

Confidence, teamwork, self-motivation, communication, and independence.

Future ambitions?

To become a forensic radiographer.

Would you recommend Teesside?

Yes, there is a lot of great support on campus and excellent facilities.

Any advice to anyone thinking of studying here?

Join a sports or society team or become a student ambassador, to make friends and your build confidence. Make the time for your course – it will be worth it in the end. And go out, have fun, and make memories.
