An excellent reputation

Our performing arts team is made up both of professional practitioners and researchers with international profiles, with close and current links to the industry.

Quality teaching

You are taught and inspired by doctors, readers and professors – many are active researchers within the arts. And you benefit from the fact that a number of academic staff and an impressive list of specialist visiting lecturers are creative practitioners, offering professional experience as well as high standards of tuition and guidance. Staff are also involved in research which informs teaching and ensures our standards are abreast of current practice.

Professional awareness

Each discipline area enables you to explore and innovate in the context of professional awareness. There are opportunities to undertake live projects with a range of clients and agencies to gain experience of real business situations and make a significant addition to your portfolio. Our students produce public events and performances as self-authored research projects and for client-sponsored events.

Applicants are normally invited for an interview/audition which enables you to see our outstanding facilities, meet the staff and students, and view current work. It also provides us with an opportunity to discuss your experience and help you decide on the best degree route for you.

Offers of places are normally made following the interview and we strongly encourage you to attend. If you are unable to attend, we can organise a virtual interview: you send your work to us, online or on CD or DVD, and we discuss it over the telephone, via email or Skype.

First-class facilities

We provide you with individual studios and access to the latest facilities with skilled technicians who can help you create and innovate. We have a dedicated print room with bookbinding, a media centre that loans cameras, specialist equipment (including video drones), soundproof recording studios, green screen production studios, Mac and PC labs, and a stellar workshop for wood, 3D printing, metalworking and welding. We are also one of the only art programmes in the UK with dark rooms to work with analogue photography – and all enhanced by excellent technical support.

Excellent prospects

Our arts courses are designed especially for those wanting to work in this ever-expanding industry. Alongside leading roles in arts and music production, the courses also prepare students for many other careers including teacher, animateur, director and presenter. All our courses cover both live and recorded media to help future-proof your career and maximise your employability.

Digital technology is at the forefront of nearly every media projection including film, television, new media, animations and computer games. We nurture your talent by giving you the knowledge, skills and experience you need to succeed within the industry whether your area of interest is in performing, composing, producing, facilitating, teaching or filling any number of roles in the world of the arts, music and entertainment.

The School conducts research on a wide range of topics from computer science to games, animation, media and the arts. Our research areas include data-driven AI, software and systems, cybersecurity, computer games and immersive technologies, animation, media and fine art.
