Consistently high scores in the annual National Student Survey have placed our levels of student satisfaction among the best in the country.
The level of vocational skills and the impressive employment record of graduates from Art & Design contributed to national recognition of the high quality of our course provision by the Quality Assurance Agency which awarded us an excellent teaching quality score. Their review also highlighted our well-planned learning resources, particularly IT provision.Students benefit from the fact that a number of academic staff and an impressive list of specialist visiting lecturers are creative practitioners, offering professional experience as well as high standards of tuition and guidance. Staff are also involved in research which informs teaching and ensures our standards are abreast of current practice. Many students stay on to study a postgraduate qualification to enhance their knowledge and skills further. We are constantly expanding our range of postgraduate courses to meet the needs of industry and employers.
Each discipline area enables you to explore and innovate in the context of professional awareness. There are opportunities to undertake ‘live’ projects for external clients to gain experience of real business situations and make a significant addition to your portfolio. Our students compete in national competitions and produce public exhibitions as self-authored research projects for client-sponsored events.
An impressive range of equipment and facilities supports each discipline. Most learning and teaching takes place in spacious and flexible studios, well supported by extensive digital resources and a wide range of industry-standard software. The new Athena Building provides a superb purpose-built undergraduate teaching facility for Art & Design students. We have dedicated fine art studios, experimental workshops and access to first-class new media facilities. We offer facilities for printmaking, photography, woodworking, metal, glass, plastics, reverse engineering, new media and rapid prototyping, all enhanced by excellent technical support.
Applicants for Art & Design courses are normally invited for an interview which enables you to see our outstanding facilities, meet staff and students, and view current work. It also provides us with an opportunity to discuss your portfolio and help you decide which is the best degree route for you.Offers of places are normally made at or after the interview and we strongly encourage you to attend. If you are unable to attend, we can organise a virtual interview: you send your work to us, usually on CD, and we discuss it with you over the telephone or via email.
This field of study offers an exciting range of employment possibilities in the arts, entertainment and cultural industries. We enjoy strong local, regional and national links with industry professionals who contribute to teaching and project themes. While mainly vocational, these courses also provide you with useful transferable skills.
