Access and participation priorities

An inclusive campus that embraces diversity and supports students

At Teesside University we believe that everyone should be able to achieve their full potential and are committed to creating an inclusive campus that embraces diversity and supports students to succeed.

To achieve this, within our Access and Participation Plan we have identified priorities to enable access to higher education, ensure success in students' studies and support progression into graduate level employment or further studies.

Priorities have been developed through analysis of data and in consideration of the Office for Students' Equality-of-Opportunity-Risk-Register. Knowing the barriers that students can face enables us to create targeted interventions to address them.

Our priorities are:

Access

We recognise that for some there are systemic barriers to higher education. Our goals to enable access for all are:

  • To increase the number of UK students from ethnically and culturally diverse communities who study with us.
  • To increase the number of students who have left or have experience of being in care.
  • To improve the regional opportunities for pre-16 students to attend HE by 2028 and to reduce the gap in attainment rates in the North East region when compared to the national average.

Success

We recognise that disabled students and those with mental health conditions face barriers to remaining in higher education and achieving their full potential. To ensure success our goals are to ensure that students with disabilities and/or mental health conditions:

  • Continue in their studies.
  • Successfully complete their studies.
  • Achieve first class or upper second-class degrees at the same rate as their peers.

Progression

We recognise that progression into graduate-level employment or further education can vary regionally and are linked with socio-economic backgrounds, access to social or financial capital or experiencing mental health conditions. To support progression our goals are to:

  • Reduce and remove the gap in progression rates for graduates from areas where entry to higher education is usually low.
  • Significantly reduce the gap in progression for graduates with diagnosed mental health conditions when compared to graduates with no known disability.
