Alex wants to work in the financial sector when he graduates
I feel Teesside has filled me with the confidence and knowledge to break through into the financial sector, I hope that after my third year I will be fully ready to hit the ground running.
After a year in the US, I was offered an ice hockey scholarship, but decided Teesside was more affordable and I believe a degree will open more doors for me. I chose to study accounting and finance because I work well with numbers, even though there is a lot of theory in accounting.
I love the theory work. People on apprenticeships may get more of a hands on experience but they don't seem to get the background knowledge or the simple accounting concepts like debits and credits.
The library is absolutely fantastic. It is a great place to study and socialise with classmates. I even remember ordering a Chinese takeaway while I worked on my assignment!
My favourite module was Company Law and Audit. I studied what rules must be followed and examples of events which have shaped the law. I also enjoyed Financial Accounting, I learned how to prepare financial statements and on issues we may encounter and how to treat them.
I am currently on a placement with KPMG in Luxembourg, working as a junior auditor in the private equity sector. My work involves checking to see investment funds are being true and fair on their financial statements.
I want to start work as an auditor, with aspirations to move up to a chief financial officer position.

I would definitely recommend it, it is very interesting and gives you a good set of skills to start in the finance sector.
You won't regret it.
