I’d advise you to take the opportunities you can. There are so many events and projects you can get involved with so make the most of it.
I had recently won a national award and was volunteering at MIMA. This gave me an insight into art which I wanted to develop. I decided to apply after reading all the amazing things that the school has to offer.
My favourite modules were when we got to spend time in the workshops as well as working with the MIMA collection and art allowing me to curate my work.
As a neurodivergent student, student services have gone out of their way to help me. I’ve also found that the library has a great collection of books and staff willing to help.
There’s a growing art scene with events such as Middlesbrough Art Week, Wintertide Festival, Stockton International Riverside Festival and Nightfall Festival. These provide great opportunities for those wanting to get a foot in the door in the arts.
I joined the Tabletop Society to play games such as Dungeons and Dragons and the Performing Arts Society which were great opportunities to make friends. I also had fun singing, dancing and acting. I am also a course rep meaning I speak for my class at important meetings.
I've worked on the award-winning project ‘People Powered Tales: Stories from the River Tees’ as a volunteer with MIMA and I’ve had my work featured at Middlesbrough Art Week.
I really enjoyed spending time looking at how to curate my own shows and learning different types of art making.
I am currently applying for an MA in Curation and I hope to work in galleries in the near future.
