Teesside is ideal for studying sport and exercise. We have strong links with regional and elite teams in the area. Diverse attractions close by include Middlesbrough Football Club’s Riverside Stadium, the beautiful beaches at Saltburn (for surfing and other water sports), the picturesque North York Moors for walking, running and cycling, the world-class water sports facilities at the Tees Barrage, Yarm village (voted ‘Best High Street in Britain’ in a BBC poll, 2007) plus mima (the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art).

First-class facilities
Our flagship £6.5m sports science Olympia Building houses state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. This includes an environmental chamber and extensive research laboratories in physiology (with gas analysis equipment, blood sampling facilities, ergometers etc), motion analysis (equipped with motion-sensitive cameras and force platforms) and data analysis. Additionally, a cutting-edge sports science facility with hydrotherapy pool, advanced anatomy and strength and conditioning laboratories, and sports therapy area is opening in 2010.

Sport & Exercise scored excellent marks in a national review by the Quality Assurance Agency. The enthusiasm and commitment of academic staff was highlighted as a particular strength.
Elite athletes
The University's Sports Bursary Scheme supports elite athletes competing at a national level, or with the potential to do so, with information and funding to enable you to continue competing at the top level.
Research and enterprise
Current research interests and expertise inform teaching. These include exercise and over-training, exercise and psychological well-being, exercise in extreme environments, flexibility of elite athletes, children's attitudes towards physical activity, representations of sport, and sport and national identity.

Our courses provide a mix of practical expertise and academic knowledge to prepare you for applied and management roles in sport and exercise. You’ll develop the skills and confidence to follow the career of your choice in sports therapy, PE teaching, sports development, coaching, sports psychology, health promotion, sports journalism and in sports science research and provision for athletes.
