How to apply for your accommodation and other things you will need to consider
When you get your visa, please let us know. We will then send you a checklist to help you with all the remaining things you need to do.
Your accommodation
Apply for your accommodation
You must accept a conditional or unconditional course place offer before you can apply for accommodation online.
- Before you come to the UK, you will need to organise a place to live. As an international student arriving in the UK for the first time, we strongly recommend that you stay in University-managed accommodation at least for the first year that you are here
- All University-managed accommodation is five minutes' walk from the campus, so you will not have to familiarise yourself with public transport routes while you are trying to adapt to your new life in the UK. You will also benefit from 24-hour support from student wardens and security staff
- To apply for University-managed accommodation, you must have progressed with your application and received your CAS
Allocating accommodation
- Once you have been allocated a room we will let you know by email
- A formal offer of the hall and room will be posted to you from May onwards
Confirming accommodation
- If you apply for University-managed accommodation and we offer you a place, you must accept or reject the offer of accommodation within the timeframe stated on your accommodation offer letter (usually within 14 days)
- If you accept, you will need to pay a £150 deposit when you return your acceptance to us
- Please note - insurance applicants cannot apply at this stage
- If you need to take up your insurance offer, you will be emailed in August with details of how to apply for accommodation
- International students must follow the same procedure as UK students - please don't wait until you receive the outcome of your visa application

Teesside International Airport
Scheduled flights operate to and from a range of UK and European destinations.
You can connect via Amsterdam (Schiphol), a major international hub.
Teesside International Airport is 13 miles from the University.
Airport code: MME
Newcastle Airport
Offers scheduled flights to key international hubs, including Amsterdam (Schiphol), Paris (Charles de Gaulle), London (Heathrow) and Brussels.
There is also a daily service to Dubai.
Newcastle Airport is less than 50 miles from Teesside University.
Airport code: NCL
By train
Middlesbrough train station is part of the UK's national rail network. You can travel to all UK stations including Newcastle, Manchester and Manchester Airport, London and London Heathrow Airport.
Free meet and greet service
When you've applied for your accommodation, don't forget to book our free Meet and Greet service.
You'll be welcomed by one of our student ambassadors on arrival at Durham Tees Valley or Newcastle International Airport and taken directly to your new home.
Online enrolment
Online enrolment can be completed from anywhere in the world whether you are still in your home country or if you have arrived in the UK.
It should be completed as soon as possible after you have received your CAS.
You do not need to wait until have received your visa to complete this part of enrolment.

Checking your Immigration Status with share codes
Share codes enable you to view and prove your immigration status online and you will need to use these to prove your right to study, work and rent in the UK.
How to View and Prove Your Immigration Status
To view and prove your immigration status online, you will need:
- Details of the identity document you used when you applied (your passport, national identity card, or biometric residence card or permit)
- Your date of birth
- Access to the mobile number or email address you used when you applied (you'll be sent a code for logging in)
You will be able to view:
- Your name
- Your immigration status (e.g., Student, Dependant, Pre-settled, or Settled status)
- The expiry date of your status
- The conditions of your status (e.g., work, study, and rent permissions)
You may also view other information depending on your type of immigration permission.
What is a Share Code and how do I use it?
A share code is a code you generate online to share your immigration status with others. You can generate a share code to:
- Prove your immigration status in general (e.g., evidence of the right to study)
- Prove your right to work
- Prove your right to rent
Step-by-step guide to generating a share code for the University
- STEP 1 - Access
https://www.gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status
- STEP 2 - Select the 'Start non' button
- STEP 3 - Select the document you have used when you have made your application 'Passport' and select Continue
- STEP 4 - Enter your date of birth, and select Continue
- STEP 5 - You will be prompted to select a way to verify your identity in order to log in (either via email or phone).
Insert the code you have received by email or phone
- STEP 6 - Select 'Prove your status'
- STEP 7 - Select 'Get share code'
- STEP 8 - Select 'To prove my immigration status for anything else'. This is the correct share code for the University and will begin with an S
- STEP 9 - Select 'Create share code'
- STEP 10 - Log into your CAS Shield account and input your share code under the Travel Docs section.
You can then share the code with the relevant party, along with your date of birth. The share code will typically last between 30 and 90 days.
Updating Your Online Immigration account
It is important to keep your UKVI account details up to date to avoid issues when proving your immigration status.
You should update your account if you've changed your:
- Mobile phone number
- Email address
- Name
- Identity document (e.g., passport or national identity card)
- UK address
