Design trio choose June in October

03 November 2009

BBC’s annual charity success Children in Need will be broadcast next month and BBC Look North has produced a 2010 calendar to raise funds.

Each month is represented by a regional photograph taken by a viewer. To pick the 12 images from hundreds of entries, the Look North team turned to diverse selection panels. For the June image they contacted Teesside University’s art and design section in the School of Arts & Media.

Hannah Bayman, one of BBC Look North’s presenters, said: 'We thought it would be nice to have a younger photo jury who would have a fresh perspective. And we particularly wanted students with an eye for design.'

The design lecturers picked three postgraduate students for the photo jury. The trio were, Emma Boyes, 24, from Norton, MA Digital Art and Design, Olivia Monaghan, 22, from Middlesbrough, MA Future Design and Dan Rad, 25, from Lancaster, MA Future Arts.

Michael Hall, Senior lecturer in Graphic Design said: 'We picked these three students as they could all offer their different expertise, from arts, digital media and design perspectives. We have great confidence in their ability to make well considered critical judgments as they all use photography to a high level in different ways within their own practice.'

After some design deliberation, the students picked an image of a dog swimming towards a boat, at Whitburn, Sunderland, taken by Graeme Hunt from Whitburn.

Dan Rad said: 'We felt very honoured to be chosen to pick the image for June. After a long hard discussion we chose the dog in the sea image as it’s the best one that positively captures the month of June, quite a fun month.'

Emma said: 'It was quite a difficult decision as there were some really stunning pictures and quality images to choose from. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished calendar as the June image shows a month when everyone’s looking forward to the weather getting warmer.'

Olivia Monaghan added: 'There were some gorgeous images to look at. The work was exceptional, like that of professional photographers.'

Details of how to order the calendar will be available at www.bbc.co.uk/looknorth
