Travelling to Teesside
Page last updated: 07/02/2024
Teesside University is situated in Middlesbrough in the North East of England, close to Newcastle and Teesside airports, and with excellent road, rail and bus links to the rest of the UK. Middlesbrough is very accessible from major UK airports and cities, including London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham, so there are many ways you can travel to our campus.
With that in mind, it is worth planning your travel to make your arrival in the UK as smooth as possible. It is usually best to book your tickets and plan your travel in advance, as this makes it easier when you arrive and can also help you to save money (advance tickets are usually cheaper in the UK). We've put together some guidance to help you plan your journey, whether you're travelling by road, rail or air.

Getting to Middlesbrough
After you have booked your flights, you will need to look at different options for travelling from the airport (or other port of arrival) to Middlesbrough. Travelling by coach (long distance bus) is often cheaper than travelling by rail or private taxi, but can take longer.
Here are some tips to help you plan your journey:
- Look at transit times from the airport (or other port of arrival) where you will be entering the UK to Middlesbrough. We've put together a table to show you the approximate travel times to Middlesbrough from major UK cities (you will need to add in travel time from the airport to the train or coach station when planning your trip)
- Consider whether you need to make any transfers to central transit hubs, for example, if you arrive at Heathrow, you may need to travel into London before travelling north to Teesside and this could impact your travel time and decision on how you travel.
- For those arriving in London, it may also be possible to book a short internal flight (approximately 1 hour) up to Newcastle. It is worth considering this as a transfer option before travelling on by bus or rail.
- Consider whether you may want to book overnight accommodation before travelling to Teesside. Wherever possible we recommend that students arrive earlier in the day.
- Book your ticket online before you travel (make sure you leave enough time to travel from the airport to your transit point if your connection is not at the airport).
- Usually, the earlier you book your ticket, the cheaper it will be, but some services, such as trains, only allow booking a certain number of weeks in advance, so make sure you check that the correct day is available when booking.
- Travelling 'off-peak' is often cheaper and quieter, which can be useful when you have lots of luggage. Look for 'off-peak' tickets to help you find cheaper travel options. Please be aware that these can come with restrictions, so make sure that you have checked any requirements before booking an off-peak ticket.
International Meet and Greet Service
Twice each year, in September and January, the University operates a free collection service from Newcastle and Teesside airports. This service will collect eligible students from these airports and transfer you to your accommodation in Middlesbrough.
More detailed information on this service, and how to book onto it, can be found here.
Getting to our Middlesbrough campus if you are travelling independently
If you arrive at Middlesbrough bus station or train station, the quickest and easiest way to get to campus is to hop into a taxi and give the driver the university address. Travel to our campus from the bus or train station should take no more than 10 minutes and you can find help to access your accommodation in the Student Life Building (or our Security Office if you arrive later in the day).
Arriving late at night
If you are arriving late at night, we recommend that you book a hotel and travel to Middlesbrough the following day.
If you are arriving out of office hours*, and you have been allocated University
accommodation, you should travel to the University Security Office which is located
in the Library on campus. You will need to show your accommodation confirmation
before the security staff in the office will give you your accommodation keys.
*Office Hours - Monday to Thursday 8:30 to 17:00, Friday 8:30 to 16:30
