Academic Misconduct (Appeal Stage)

Stages 1 and 2 are administered at School and/or Collaborative level in the first instance. However, if you are dissatisfied with the decision of an Academic Misconduct Stage 1 Meeting or Stage 2 Hearing and fall within the grounds you may submit an appeal.

What is the academic misconduct appeal?

The academic misconduct appeal stage is administered by OSCAR.

If you are found guilty of Academic Misconduct then you may submit an appeal but only under specific grounds, namely:

  • that the decision reached by the Stage 1 Meeting or Stage 2 Hearing as to whether Academic Misconduct has occurred was wholly inconsistent and/or unsupported by evidence and/or
  • that there was a material and/or procedural irregularity by the Stage 1 Meeting or Stage 2 Hearing which has prejudiced the student's case and/or
  • additional evidence has come to light since the decision of the Stage 1 Meeting or Stage 2 Hearing, which could not have been expected to have been produced at the time of the consideration of the case.

What should you do if you wish to submit submit an appeal

You should submit to OSCAR, within 7 days of the date of the decision letter/report informing you of the outcome of the Stage 1 Meeting or Stage 2 Hearing, an Academic Misconduct Appeal Form available from OSCAR, or the University's website ( All sections of the Appeal Form must be completed as fully as possible, following the guidance in the Academic Misconduct Application Pack. Only in exceptional circumstances will late applications be considered.

Appeal Process

Where can you get advice?

OSCAR can assist you with the process and the Students' Union can provide advice and guidance on your individual circumstances.

You should contact an advisor from the Students' Union who will be able to assist you.
