Research and innovation

Dr Venkatesan Venkata Krishnan and Qarib Ullah with Binding solutions staff

Teesside University has partnered with Binding Solutions Limited (BSL) and Innovate UK to develop an innovative low-carbon composite pellet technology aimed at revolutionising steel production. This collaboration seeks to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the steel industry by introducing a sustainable alternative to traditional iron ore pellets.

Challenge

The steel industry is a major contributor to global carbon dioxide emissions. To address this environmental challenge, there is a pressing need for innovative solutions that can reduce the carbon footprint of steel manufacturing.

Solution

BSL has developed a patented cold agglomeration process that produces high-quality iron ore pellets without the need for high-temperature induration.

In collaboration with Teesside University and Innovate UK, BSL is advancing this technology to further enhance its efficiency and scalability. The partnership focuses on hydrogen operations, reduction chemistry, mineral agglomeration as well as material characterisation and optimisation.

Impact

The implementation of BSL's composite pellet technology offers several significant benefits:

  • 70% reduction in carbon emissions
  • 70% reduction in energy usage
  • up to 100% reduction in sulphur oxides
  • up to 99% reduction in nitrogen oxide.

The technology has the potential to replace the need for sintering and induration processes, which are energy intensive and account for approximately 15% of carbon emissions from the global steel industry.

This collaboration exemplifies Teesside University's commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in industrial processes.

*Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) aim to help business improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills within the UK knowledge base. This KTP project was co-funded by UKRI through Innovate UK.
