Chelsea Chin Huey Teng came from Malaysia to study BA (Hons) Business and Data Analytics.
The highlight of my student experience has been realising how far I’ve come, something I couldn’t see at the beginning of my studies. I’ve developed skills I never thought I would, from technical tools to problem-solving and critical thinking.
Achieving first class honours felt out of reach when I first started my studies. There were so many skills I had to develop from scratch. But with determination and support, I grew more capable and confident each semester. Achieving first class honours is something I’ll always be proud of.
I was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship in recognition of my academic potential and passion for creating positive change. Being awarded the scholarship validated my goals and gave me the confidence to keep pursuing them, even in moments of doubt.
During my studies I was awarded the Professor Leni Oglesby Prize for Achievement. This prize recognises students who overcome personal challenges while achieving academic success. It means a great deal to me; it symbolises perseverance, self-belief, and acknowledges the support I received from Teesside staff and my friends and peers.
The highlight of my student experience has been realising how far I’ve come, something I couldn’t see at the beginning of my studies. I’ve developed skills I never thought I would, from technical tools to problem-solving and critical thinking. I have learned how to push through challenges, manage my time, and work independently while learning how to collaborate and adjust to a different schedule. It wasn’t always easy, but those difficult moments helped to shape who I am today and made this journey truly meaningful.
My course gave me hands-on experience with powerful tools and software like Power BI, Python, PowerApps, and SQL - a programming language for storing and processing data, which I never imagined I’d be confident in using. I developed a strong analytical skillset and learned to connect data to a real-world business strategy. Even though I’m still shaping my career direction, the technical and strategic foundation I’ve gained gives me flexibility to explore roles in consulting, data analytics, or even start my own business.
I’m exploring job opportunities in consulting, particularly in the areas of data strategy, analytics, and sustainability. I’m also considering starting my own business, exploring technology with purpose, especially in the health or sustainable finance fields.
I’m excited to take the skills, theory and values I’ve gained at Teesside and apply them in real-world initiatives in policy, sustainable finance, and community building. I want to make meaningful contributions back home and across Southeast Asia.
Don’t just chase grades, build relationships, ask for help, and stay open to change. Your journey might surprise you. Learn from others, like I did, and never underestimate the power of small steps.
