Tell us why you decided to go to university and why you chose Teesside?

As a veterinary medicine graduate with a master’s in veterinary pathology from Bangladesh, I accumulated six years of professional experience in the pharmaceutical industry. I was driven by a strong desire to explore more about the field of microbiology, which propelled me towards furthering my education.

I conducted a thorough research, while looking for universities in the UK. Comparatively affordable tuition fees, advanced course curriculum and overall academic excellence gave me the confidence to finalise Teesside University. I found that, School of Health & Life Sciences, with its dedicated modern building, well-equipped laboratories, exceptional research facilities at National Horizon Centre and Teesside University's collaboration with NHS and industry professionals, showcased its commitment to practical learning which was the motivation of choosing Teesside University for my MSc course.

What do you like most about your course and why? Are there any modules which you really enjoy?

I enjoy all the modules I attended because of the enriched and engaging contents and the excellent teaching staff who made all the modules so interesting that we actually had a fun in the classroom. I had a great time learning about CRISPR/cas9 technology, human diseases, epigenetic mechanism, and diagnostic techniques and all the modules pushed my scientific thinking to its maximum capacity. I attended lab classes at both Middlesbrough Campus and National Horizons Centre, which is equipped with state-of-the-art facility and cutting-edge technologies. During my placement. I shadowed a bioscience laboratory and with the help of cooperative technicians, I got hands on practical experience on various analytical techniques and laboratory operational procedures. Overall, it was an amazing experience for me.
Research project was my favourite module, where I learned how to conduct independent research. Every stage of the project was successfully planned and carried out by me, including project design, risk assessment, material, and sample procurement. I enjoyed working with my classmates on assignments and research projects and I am grateful for the exceptional support I received from my supervisor during my dissertation. I am thrilled to share that I am one of the first students to utilise the lab facilities in BIOS to complete my master’s project which was the most amazing part of my course.

What are the differences between studying in your Home country compared to studying in the UK?

Studying in the UK offers exceptional opportunities for students to engage with top-class study materials and cutting-edge technologies. The environment enables collaboration with highly qualified students from around the world, expanding our depth of knowledge. Studying in the UK has significantly differed from learning in my home country. Due to my exposure to global education, my career growth has taken an upward trajectory. The UK's strong commitment to excellence in education, diverse perspectives, and advanced resources have created a dynamic learning atmosphere that has enhanced my academic and career prospects.

Are you a member of any clubs or societies, a course rep or student ambassador?

I am an enthusiastic member of the Postgraduate Society, actively engaging in on-campus and online events. This involvement extends to various activities, including career coaching, day trips, and cultural events. As a committed member, I have enriched my soft-skillset, and have contributed to a dynamic academic community, fostering a collaborative and supportive student environment.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement?

During my advanced practice module, I chose to complete my placement within the University as I wanted to gain laboratory experience under our Bio-Science laboratory technician team. With the help of my supervisor, I successfully shadowed the highly skilled bio-science technician team. I gained intermediate and advanced practical experience in laboratory management and various analytical skills.

What skills/experience have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I have taken advantage of every chance I could at Teesside. The most exciting experiences include CPD-certified advanced training at the National Horizon Centre and the shadowing opportunity in the bioscience lab. These experiences gave me the basic knowledge I needed for my research career. Working on my research project in the newly built BIOS lab has given me more exposure and confidence to conduct individual lab-based research. Group projects helped me hone my communication and leadership abilities and promote productive cooperation. I also improved my writing skills and time management, which are critical for any career. The combination of the modules I was taught, and laboratory-based research experience gave me a strong base, which will help me secure a PhD. My educational journey in the UK at Teesside has given me the skills I need to succeed in the competitive and dynamic job market, preparing me for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I am deeply passionate about conducting research and my ambition for the future is to pursue a PhD in the field of drug discovery. My long-term goal is to work as a researcher and immerse myself in research dedicated to the discovery of novel antimicrobial molecules. I aspire to contribute significantly to this field, ultimately playing a crucial role in saving lives from the deadly effect of antimicrobial resistance.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

Without a doubt, I wholeheartedly recommend both Teesside University and my course. The unwavering support from lecturers, staff, and various student support services, creates an exceptional learning environment. Outstanding resources online and in the library, coupled with continuous academic and career guidance from module leaders, prepare students for challenging professional careers. Besides, the enriched modules and university's collaborations with NHS, various industries, and laboratories further open doors for health and life science students. Additionally, the newly built BIOS facility offers state-of-the-art laboratories with cutting-edge equipment and innovative learning facilities. It is dedicated to Health and Life Science students and is a ground-breaking opportunity for gaining outstanding knowledge and skills in research.

What advice would you offer to students thinking of coming to study here?

To prospective students considering studying here, my advice is to fully engage in the vibrant student life at Teesside. Attend all the fresher’s events, grab every opportunity the University offers and immerse yourself in the enchanting student experience. Build a strong network by participating in events organised by the Postgraduate Society and Students’ Union. Dedicate ample time to the coursework, manage your time wisely, and don’t miss placement opportunities. You will have a fantastic lifetime memory in Teesside University.
